Interior Decorator Brisbane - Style Guide for the Bohemian lover

HOW TO NAIL THE BOHEMIAN STYLE IN YOUR HOME

Bohemian or Boho decorating is for those who want their homes full of life, culture & interesting items for all the world to see. This aesthetic flies in the face of modern sensibilities and embraces the care free, relaxed and unusual. While Boho rooms tend to have certain similarities in that they are always eclectic and share similar features- no two rooms are every completely alike in the interior design world.

Boho is inspired by those who choose to lead an unconventional life such as constant travellers, actors and writers. If you are looking for a style that you can truly make your own, Boho might be for you.....

LET US TELL YOU HOW TO DO IT!

BOHEMIAN COLOURS
While there are no rules when it comes to bohemian decorating, warm earthy colours are common, as are metallic and jewel tones. You will want to think deep brown, greens and greys for base colours, then accessorize with saturated purple, fiery orange and electric blue. Combining and layer colours is what makes this style unique. Feel free to mix patterns and textures and do not be afraid to use styles that would not necessarily go together in a conventional way, this is my BIG TIP to nailing Boho.
Use dyed textiles and patterns from around the world in cushioning like Ikat from Cambodia or Suzani from central Asia - Give the space a sense of fun and exoticism. Layer throws on top of furniture and try tapestries and area rugs along the walls aside next to your art and photos.

DECORATIVE MATERIALS
As the opposite of minimal, modern and sleek, Boho embraces a "more is more" philosophy. The key to use decorative materials in a Boho room is to mix and match. Natural, basic materials like burlap and sisal can be combined with silk and chenille. The materials should have a slightly worn look, not damaged but not new either. Pillows, throws and curtains and throw rugs to combine to make a cosy, globally inspired hang -out. Canopies over beds and living areas are signature Boho embellishments
.

BOHEMIAN FURNITURE
Bohemian furniture is not found usually in store. These rooms tend to be filled with character over time. second hand and vintage items are right at home here. Each piece of furniture should be special, to tell a story. Add plush chairs and couches to saturate colours. Throw rugs or over stuffed floor pillows will create a welcome floor seating option, other options is butterfly or day beds for a more contemporary appeal.

LIGHTING AND ACCESSORIES
Ambient, understated lighting will unify your room and complete the calm and relaxing feel. Rather than overhead features, decorate with lanterns, candles, floor and table lamps, perfect for the mix and match look. Embrace the natural world in centre to this style will bring your room to life with ferns and hanging plants, alternately succulents.

FINALLY.... pull your room together with family heirlooms, handmade items and objects from your travels. Accessories should tell your story, so feature what you love... tapestries, vintage bottles, maps or mismatched china.

KEEP IN MIND...  it can still be Chic and glamorous, so do not be afraid to tryout an ornate chandelier or a chunky gold framed mirror. The only rule, every item in the room needs to tell a story....

So many conflictions on what Boho - Bohemian truly is, I have decided to do this blog to really tell and show you the true understanding and concept of Bohemian Design within an home, apartment or commercial space.

BOHEMIAN - BOHO DESIGN

Bohemia is derived from Czech Republic, the nomadic, a group called the Gypsies "Bohemians"
It is in fact a word to describe the poor artists of the 19th century in Paris. It is definitely an articulated taste and personalised and unique style of dressing your interiors within your home and certainly isn't for everyone, though if done right it can look timeless and well finished.
Bohemian or Boho decorating is for those who want their homes full of life, culture and interesting items for all the world to see, it is inspired by people who choose to leave an unconventional life such as constant travellers, actors and writers.
